Hi Everyone,

Its change over time at Yarallah! The spring grass has now turned it's rich old gold. We have sown paddocks of millet and brassica and the lambs are finishing well. We applied a biodynamic fertiliser on one of the paddocks which has worked well. The green paddocks certainly stand out in the earthy coloured patchwork.

Thanks to the help of the Millet - our 'Spring Lamb' has continued well into the summer. The lambs are also supplemented with grain to ensure the best finish and meat quality. You can order a whole lamb (21-22kg) for just $200 which is fantastic value for fantastic food and all born and raised on our property near Benalla - North/East Vic.

We are now supplying Tellers restaurant in Shepparton - 55 Fryers Street, so go in and see Matthew, Dana and John and try some of our professionally cooked 'Yarallah Lamb'. We are also - for the sixth year - providing our lamb to the local butcher - 'Rettke Meats' in Carrier street Benalla.

Janet Matthews Drawing Workshop

Janet Matthews is president of the Wildlife Artist Association of Australia. Yarallah is hosting a drawing workshop with Janet on 25th & 26th of September, 2010. {module_literature,i,73463}
Janet Matthews has lived in various parts of Australia, and as an artist has long been attracted to natural themes. Some years ago, Janet began drawing wildlife and found her niche. She is passionate about her subjects and her particular style. With easy access to zoos, parks and the country from her home in Narre Warren (Victoria), Janet spends a lot of time closely observing her subjects so she can capture their personality on paper.

Newsletter Winter 2010

Hi everyone,

Its been another busy start to the year with the rain coming nice and early to create a fantastic Autumn break. The lambs are still growing really well with a nice addition of oats to their diet as it responds very quickly to the extra moisture. We are still attending the Mansfield and Violet Town markets with our tasty cuts of meat and the delicious sausages. Make sure you come up and say hello when you are there next.

We have also started lambing this year and all is going well, the ewes are all in good condition which always helps with their energy reserves at lambing time. Winston the alpaca certainly has his work cut out for him keeping the foxes away from the girls and their new lambs.

Paul Margocsy Workshop

We have just had our first workshop with Paul Margocsy - eminent wildlife artist from Melbourne. We had a fantastic weekend using air brush and a range of mediums. Paul had on display some of his beautiful bird paintings - a joy to see! Everyone went home with smiling faces, some new ideas and a fantastic looking piece of artwork to show their families.

We had 6 people staying in our farm cottage and B&B accommodation and 11 to the workshop in total. Comments that arose from the weekend;

I can't tell you how wonderful it was to spend the weekend with your family and Paul Margocsy. you were all so hospitable, the farm is wonderful and so is the food, with grateful thanks - Carol (Melbourne)

Welcome to the spring edition of Lambtalk Newsletter. Although it has felt more like summer for the last few weeks, we finally have a cool change coming tonight which will be nice. We have been pretty busy the last few months with the sheep. The ewes have all lambed well and we ended up with the best lambing percentage we have had in a good while which we were very happy about.

All the lambs are weaned now and the ewe lambs have been shorn along with all the ewes. The wether lambs are being sold now at Rettke's Butcher in Benalla and at the Violet Town, Tallarook and Mansfield Markets.

I must say the lamb is tasting extremely tender and flavoursome at the moment so you'll have to get the BBQ fired up and try some beautiful 'Spring Lamb' from Rettke's, Carrier St Benalla or find us at the farmers market.

As the grass is drying up much more rapid than usual, we have started the lambs on grain to make sure they don't slip backwards in condition. This will allow us to continue supply and maintain the excellent quality of the lamb we have all year round.

Newsletter , Autumn 09.

Well, talk about 1, 2 skip a few….. and now we are in May 2009, I can’t believe where the year has gone. Since our last Lambtalk newsletter we have finished joining the ewes and are now just one month away from the start of lambing. The ewes scanned at 96% in lamb so we are thrilled with that result.

We have had some rain which has stimulated a bit of green, now just looking for some runoff rain to fill some dams. Sowing the crops is in full flight at the moment where Tom is trying some biological fertilisers to try and stimulate a healthy soil and ensure our system remains sustainable into the future.

We are also doing some pasture cropping this year which involves sowing crops into perennial pastures. This helps stimulate biological activity in the soil, overall production long term and gives us a better chance of having grass in the summer by utilising any rain that falls in the summer. We can’t control when the rain falls so we might as well make the most of it when it does.

Apart from the cropping, we are still attending all the markets at Violet Town with our Lamb (which is the second Saturday of every month). It has been great meeting lots of new people and catching up with the regular’s of ‘Yarallah Lamb’. Please come and introduce yourself to us if you come along to the market.

Newsletter, Summer 08/09.

Welcome everyone to our new Website. I hope you all enjoy looking about and finding out what Yarallah Lamb can offer you and your family. You will gather into the future that our passion is not only producing the best quality lamb but is also in educating people on what happens in farming life.

Throughout the year we will post quartely newsletters updating you on the activities happening at ‘Yarallah’. We hope you enjoy reading our Lambtalk newsletter and learning about lamb and food production as much as we will enjoy writing it for you all.

As Christmas comes around quicker than we are all ready for, lamb orders are also coming in quicker than we expected. We have just finished shearing all of the lambs which went pretty well. The local shearing contractor from Avenel came along with 4 shearers and another rouseabout to help out on the board.

Since shearing we have been getting ready to start joining the ewes which will happen mid January. We prepare the ewes for joining by feeding an increasing plane of nutrition for a couple of weeks before the rams go in to help encourage them to cycle so we get maximum lambing percentage. The perennial grasses are helping the ewes maintain a good body condition thanks to the recent rain we have had.

Apart from that we are getting ready to cook the ham and the chook for Christmas day lunch with the family as well as getting some Christmas cheer by decorating the house.

We all hope everyone has/had a very happy Christmas and all the best for the new year. Our first appearance in 2009 will be at Violet Town market on the 10th of January so we look forward to seeing you there.
